Jose Mourinho praised Marouane Fellaini’s ‘strong mentality’ after he recovered from Old Trafford boos to score against Hull in the League Cup semi-final.
The Belgian midfielder was booed by some United fans during a game against Tottenham last month after giving away a penalty in the 1-1 draw with Everton at Goodison Park the previous week.
Brought on as a late substitute against Hull, he scored the crucial second goal to put United on the verge of the League Cup final ahead of the semi-final second leg in two weeks’ time.
And Mourinho was delighted with Fellaini’s impact, celebrating with the 29-year-old on the touchline after his goal.
Mourinho said: “That’s why I am here, to always support the players, especially the players in a difficult situation. But he has a very strong mentality and he always coped well with the situation.
“He was not afraid after the Everton match to go to the pitch again. He played a phenomenal game against Reading and today he scored a very important goal for us. He knows he is a very important player for me.”.
